CANMORE, Alberta – While it’s true that there’s never a bad time to visit Canmore, some yearly events make vacationing here at specific times an absolute must.
Ever since the Olympic Winter Games came to Calgary in 1988, Canmore has become a sporting boom town. Tourism, of course, followed, making it a popular destination for many segments of pop culture.
Take, for example, film making. The stunning scenery of the area has drawn the eye of the biggest stars of the silver screen. What films have been shot here? “Brokeback Mountain,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Open Range,” “The Edge,” “Legends of the Fall,” “Shanghai Noon,” “Mystery, Alaska,” “Snow Dogs,” and the pilot episode of “Everwood,” to name just a recent few.
Here are some activity highlights we recommend:
Canmore Ice Climbing Festival: The main feature of this December event presented by Arc’teryx is an 18-meter (60-foot) manmade icewall  on the edge of Canmore’s downtown. The wall is made out of chicken wire, scaffolding and long hoses. There’s more to do here than just climb, though; an exhibitor tent, climbing clinics and guest speakers are also on hand.
24 Hours of Adrenalin: Claimed by organizers in 2005 to be the world’s fastest-growing mountain biking competition, 24 Hours of Adrenalin tasks solo riders or teams of riders to complete as many laps on a given circuit as possible within 24 hours. The competition takes place in cities across North America. In Canmore, the circuit is a 16-kilometer course at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Different cities hold the competition at different times; this year’s race in Canmore was held in late July.
Rocky Mountain Ski Challenge: Held this year in March, the ski challenge invites skiers to race each other over various distances in various styles. The all-day affair is hosted by the Canmore Nordic Ski Club.
The Rock and Fossil Show: Exactly what the name implies. Have a rock or fossil and you’re not sure exactly what it is? Bring it here to be evaluated by a professional geologist. Or just come by to see what other people are bringing. The show is usually held in October.
