Powderhorn Resort is a great ski area about 45 minutes outside of Grand Junction, Colorado.Over 250 inches of snow falls every year at this resort off the edge of Grand Mesa. Soaring 4,000 feet above the valley below, it is a mostly intermediate resort with 1,600 skiable acres.
Powderhorn has 600 acres of groomed terrain, which is broken down into 20% green trails, 50% intermediate, 15% advanced and 15% for experts only. There is also some backcountry skiing opportunities for the brave and adventurous.
If needed, Powderhorn has snowmaking on 21 acres of its runs. The terrain is serviced by four lifts: one quad, two doubles, and one surface lift.
Powderhorn has a ski and ride school open with lessons for adults and children. They also have a number of special programs, including women’s clinics, telemark clinics, learn to ride intensives, and Young at Heart ski groups.
There are two terrain parks at Powderhorn on EZ and Maverick. Try out their boxes, wall rides, rollers, rails and jump lines. The resort hosts a few rail jams throughout the year that are popular with riders and spectators alike.
In addition to the everyday upkeep of the resort, Powderhorn has an extensive commitment to the environment. They recycle hundreds of pounds of cardboard, along with cans, glass bottles, catalogs and newspapers. Through their efforts, they have lowered their impact on the areas landfills by 40 percent.
Ski-in/ski-off accommodations are available next to the resort, as well as lots of hotels and condominiums in Grand Junction.
To get to Powderhorn from the east/west/north, take exit 49 off of Interstate 70 to Colorado Highway 65. Follow the highway for 20 miles and look for Powderhorn to your right. From the South, take Colorado Highway 50 to Highway 92 east from Delta. Turn left on Highway 65 and head north across the Grand Mesa. Powderhorn will come up on your left.
