Eldora Ski Resort is a prime student pick for many reasons. The mountain is just a cheap 20-minute bus ride away from Boulder, home to the big and busy University of Colorado. With Eldora, Denver students can skip the traffic and nightmarish hassle of Interstate 70 and opt out for a mountain resort that is affordable and fun.
Location and value
The main reason why Eldora rocks for students is due to location and price. Students from surrounding mountain towns and the Denver suburbs choose Eldora when they either don’t have a license or don’t like weekend ski traffic. The local and regional RTD bus system swoops skiers and boarders from stops along the nearby Front Range, adding a simple solution for those without a set of wheels.
The mountain also reels in the younger crowd by offering cheap deals on season passes and four-pack lift tickets – two options way more affordable than what the big guys offer. Plus, instead of blowing bucks for nightlife or lodging, the majority of visitors duck down into Boulder for nights out. Foodwise, Eldora offers Fantastic grub and microbrews for a smaller price than its competitors.
Varied terrain
Eldora Ski area isn’t the biggest behemoth resort in Colorado, but what it lacks in its 680 acres it makes up with snow coverage. The annual snowfall reaches 300 inches a year, and Eldora’s snowmaking system easily blankets the mountain’s entirety.
Eldora has got it all, just in a smaller selection. Backcountry bowls, tree runs, groomers and moguls are all included. There is a separate bunny hill that cleverly divides the beginners from the rest, and the simple base and lodge layout makes it easy for families to stick together. Snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails are all around the surrounding forest, catering to those looking to cruise on flat ground.
The terrain park holds some serious rail and box designs. Jump lines are (usually) shaped, and there are some credible jibs around. Overall Eldora’s freestyle section works because it lacks heavy intimidation but is still fun. A halfpipe is usually shaped as well, but this depends on snow conditions.
Simply put, Eldora is ideal for those on a low budget, prefer solitude from the masses, or can only manage half-day skiing and riding. It’s perfect for intermediates and those looking just to goof around with friends. Eldora’s great for students.
