Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek Pass is a Southern Colorado powder utopia generally off the radar for holiday vacationers. Located southwest in Rio Grande National Forest, the drive to Wolf Creek ski area is an ambitious task coming from Denver but well worth the effort for powder freaks.
Powder powder everywhere
How much powder? Ski Wolf Creek and enjoy an annual average of 465 inches of natural snow. Its state reputation proudly goes rests as the ski resort with “The Most Snow in Colorado”. Its terrain barely exceeding 1,600 skiable acres, but with powder this deep size just doesn’t matter.
The most common conditions at Wolf Creek are floating fresh tracks of powder for skiers and riders. Recent record snowfalls include 92 inches in 7 days early 2008, and in early 2009 the area received 152 inches in 15 days. A snowstorm at Wolf Creek usually dumps around two feet of light and fluffy snow per day; most Colorado ski resorts are lucky if they hit the 12-inch mark per day.
Small but fun
Since Wolf Creek Resort is off the beaten ski path the vibe is small and cozy. The ski and snowboard crowd rarely exceed 5,000 daily, though the lift capacity is double. The terrain is impressively diverse, from a small beginner section to a few groomed intermediate trails for those tasting powder for the first time.
Challenging glades and peaceful tree runs in waist-deep powder is a dream come true at Wolf Creek. For incredible natural terrain, drops and pillows head to the Water Fall Area via the Alberta chairlift. Wolf Creek will test the skill and strength to any backcountry enthusiast.
The lodge carries a laidback mountain feel, with warm and affordable meals in a cozy environment. Make it to the Pathfinder bar and enjoy the fine microbrewery selection from Steamworks Brewery, San Luis Valley Brewing Company, Ska Brewing, Breckenridge Brewery and New Belgium Brewing Company ales.
Take on the challenge of Wolf Creek and be rewarded with the deepest powder in the state, and one of the best in the country.
