BANFF NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA—I don’t mean to compare your children to animals but…children are a lot like animals. They can sit quietly for a little while but eventually they need to be entertained. They also need to be given food and water but that is a whole other argument! Banff National Park is the perfect place for a family to come and visit. Though it seems like it is a natural, wonderful and serene place, it also has an undercurrent of activities for kids to do outside your hotel ranging from the simple to the not-so-simple.
One amenity that not too many know about but should is the waterslide/pool in the Douglas Fir Resort up on Tunnel Mountain Road. The Douglas Fir, as a hotel, is renowned as one of the most family friendly locations in the Rockies and this slide has kept kids entertained for hours on end for years. For those a little older, there is a skateboard park at the Banff Community Rec Centre and also one on the Cave Avenue side of the Bow River. For something the whole family can do, a game of bowling at the Banff Springs Hotel is always fun as long as you don’t lose.
Towards the end of the day when you are simply too exhausted to do anything, the cinema on Bear Street or even the video rental shop (Avalanche) also on Bear Street is a great way to wind down the evening before dinner. Besides all this, a simple hike or walk with the family can not but be enjoyed by everyone. As I mentioned, both animals and children love to run free in the Rocky Mountain air and will love seeing the grazing deer and elk as much as you.
