DENVER, Colorado ( – Denver offers some of the best beer in the West. It has even been dubbed ‘Beertown’ thanks to local microbreweries such as the Wynkoop Brewing Company and the annual Great American Beer Festival held here every fall. Whether you want a free sip at the end of a tour, a night of brew and pub fare or an entire festival, you’ll find it in Denver.

Denver is sometimes called the Napa Valley of Beer, with over 70 brewpubs in a 100 mile radius of downtown. The pubs are so numerous that it is possible to simply walk from one to another.

Serious ale connoisseurs can plan ahead as Denver hosts the Great American Beer Festival each fall. Purchase one ticket and get busy sampling over 1,800 beers. Note that some events are for “members only” but you don’t have to be a beer crafter to become a member. When you hear, or read below about “award-winning beers,” chances are that this is the event where they were judged.

Anytime of year, John Hickenlooper’s Wynkoop Brewery Company is a personal favorite. Before becoming Denver’s mayor, Hickenlooper co-founded the Wynkoop Brewing Company in a historic mercantile building across the street from Union Station. Drawing on its location, the Wynkoop now offers its signature line of Railyard Ale, along with other award-winning beers such as Patty’s Chile Beer flavored with Anaheim chiles. Insider’s tip: The alcohol content on these brews can vary widely, so ask your server for details.

Just a few blocks away from the Wynkoop is the Great Divide Brewing Company, which offers free tours with samples of their award-winning beers. Tours take place at 3 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays.

Although it’s called Coors Field and you can certainly drink plenty of Coors beers, look for the Blue Moon Brewing Company at Sandlot on the northeast corner of the ballpark. Blue Moon is owned by Coors but operates here; brewing full-bodied beers like Slugger Stout and Red Field Red. Unfortunately they are only open on game days, but the Blue Moon label is sold nationwide.

Denver, Colorado offers a selection of the best beers for any taste throughout the year.
