Renting Bikes in Banff
Banff National Park, Alberta
The Canadian Rockies must be one of the most active places in the world. In winter, people gather around in coffee shops drinking hot chocolate talking about the days skiing or snow boarding. In summer, there is even more enticement to stay outside. Between hiking, canoeing, driving and sightseeing, the list of activities to do is practically endless. However, if you want to mix fresh air, exercise and the sights of Banff in your own time, Cycling is an obvious and excellent option.
As it is still early in spring, mountain biking isn’t too feasible. In the coming weeks, these trails will open and there are some excellent trails to choose from. For the family or those just looking for a gentle (ish) cycle, you can rent bikes in quite a few places in town and just head off anywhere you want. Price wise, it is a bit different to renting skis. The prices really do vary quite a bit. BackTrax on Bear Street probably has the best options but the cheapest is Showcase in Cascade Plaza (there is also an entry on Banff Ave). Paying by the hour is fine if you just want to have a cycle around town but their daily price of $29 is the best in town and lets you enjoy everything in your own time.
A really simple but rewarding route to take is the Vermillion Lake route. Cycle from Banff as if you are heading towards the motorway and take a left at the signpost for Vermillion. It is about a 30 minute bike ride one way and the sights are gorgeous. Stunning, sparkling lakes, towering mountains, marshes, elk, duck and geese and the best part is there is never really a slope so it is a gentle ride the whole way. Biking Banff is one of the most rewarding experiences in the Rockies and a great way to spend a day with the family or friends.
