BANFF NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA—Despite the many brilliant things there are about the Rockies, local transport is not one of them. The Roam bus brings you around Banff and all the hotspots very efficiently and cheaply. Nearly everything is within walking distance anyway. However, getting between Canmore and Banff is a little harder. It is only a 20 minute drive but without your own car, it isn’t straightforward.

Getting between Canmore and Banff without a car can be quite tricky.

If you are going to be doing a lot of driving, rent a car from Banff. Enterprise is comfortably the best company in town (corner of Caribou and Bear street). Parking is free almost everywhere and generally it is just a beautiful place to go for a drive. The greyhound does go from the bus station in Banff to Canmore but it is much like a politician – unreliable and costly. Buses such as the Banff Airporter and Jasper Vacations do go to Canmore too but this it is just on the way to Calgary thus expensive.

So if you are feeling up to it and it is warm enough, you can hitch hike. Yes it is illegal, no – you did not get this advice from me…but it really is the quickest and most efficient way to get between the two neighbouring towns. Of course, your safety should be put first. If there is more than one person, renting a car in either Banff or Canmore is probably your best option.
