BANFF NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA—Oh the messiness of it all. Slush Cup in Sunshine Village is one of the highlights of the calendar for skiers and fun lovers in Banff National Park and it is easy to see why. Despite the fact that it was late May and the sun was scorching, there was still plenty of snow to enjoy the last day of skiing and snow boarding as well as the extra curricular activities that come with such celebrations. The beer was flowing fast, the atmosphere was electric, the weather was perfect and it could not have been a more perfect way to end the ski season up here in the Rockies.
It is one of the busiest days in Banff and it just so happened to fall on a bank holiday this year making the atmosphere all the more crazy. Though quite a few of the runs are closed and have more or less melted away, there were still plenty of runs and off-piste to keep everyone happy. All of the bars were packed inside and out with people trying to get a view of the actual competition – yes there is a competition. The trick is to come down the hill on skis or snowboard and try and make it all the way through the pool at the bottom underneath Trappers Saloon. Though a few skiers did make it, not even one boarder managed it.
The Slush Cup is a good microcosm of what Banff is all about. It is a mixture of healthy outdoors exercise in the most beautiful surrounds in the world as well as having a great sense of fun. Banff National Park really is one of the best vacation spots in the world in both summer and winter. If you didn’t manage to make it up for a ski or snowboard this season, don’t worry, winter will be back in a short four months and it all begins again!
