Train Journey from Vancouver to Banff and the Rockies

Banff National Park, Alberta

There are a hundred different ways of getting to the Canadian Rockies from the USA and Vancouver…well more like ten. However, the most fun, efficient, unique and stunning way to see the Rocky Mountains is as it was first meant – by train. There is something so soothing about the noise of a train chugging along through empty mountain canyons with towering rock all around you and wildlife grazing in the fields. You can fly from Vancouver to Calgary but by the time you get through the post 9/11 airport security, it may take between 6 and 7 years. Driving can only take about 10 or 11 hours. This is something I have done a few times and though fun, you arrive in Banff feeling utterly exhausted and in need of rest.

The sites of the Rockies are best seen by train...or hot air balloon.

FreshTracks is one company that can cater for you and bring you and make this trip a reality. There are different packages depending on your budget and timeframe but one of the most popular is the 4 day Canadian Rockies Train Getaway. It costs $1,116 per person but you won’t even think about this once you are aboard. Day 1 – you arrive in Vancouver and enjoy everything this gorgeous city has to offer. Day 2 – you hop on the train and head to Kamloops. Step onto the outdoor viewing platform for unobstructed views of the city you leave behind. Day 3 – After an overnight stay in Kamloops, you continue onwards into the mountain while being taught the history of the railroad and everything it surrounds. On the last day you arrive in Banff with a special booklet ready to explore one of the most beautiful towns in the world.

From Banff, everything is on your doorstep. Lake Louise is only a 40 minute bus or drive away and Calgary can be reached within an hour if you break most speeding laws. It is possible to catch a train to Jasper and if you have come this far, it would be a shame to miss out on this romantic gem of a town. Anybody who has taken the train from Vancouver or even places as far as Toronto has called it the highlight of the trip.
