Castlegar, British Columbia is a terrific place to visit on a vacation to the Canadian Rockies for its interesting history, and wide variety of nearby vacation activities.

The view is always fine in the Canadian Rockies.

The area reflects the strong Russian influence that came from the Doukhobors, pacifist settlers who came to the area in 1908.  Finding their home in the Ootichenia Valley on the Columbia River’s east bank, they created one of the strongest communal enterprises in North America.

The Castlegar of today has expanded to include a wonderful mix of commerce and recreation, making it a perfect travel destination for travelers to the Canadian Rockies.  Boating, sailing, and world-class fishing are some of the activities to be found in Castlegar, with 249 kilometers of the Arrow Lakes Waterway providing a wonderful playground.  There are excellent golf courses nearby, with the 18-hole Castlegar Golf Course situated near the airport.  You can also enjoy the skiing at Whitewater, near Nelson and Red Mountain at Rossland.
