Harper Mountain Resort is a small ski hill 20 minutes from Kamloops, British Columbia.
This family owned and operated Canadian Rockies resort has been running since 1973 and is not surprisingly very family friendly. With 1,400 feet of vertical rise and 400 acres of terrain, there is a little something for everyone.
The terrain park has jumps, boxes and rails, the tube park is lift-operated and there is night skiing/riding on Thursday and Friday nights for those who want to get in a few runs after dark.
The Day Lodge at Harper Mountain is the perfect place to warm your toes by a fireplace or stop those rumblings in your stomach with some tasty hot food, all while taking in a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.
There are 16 named runs at Harper, broken down into 25% beginner trails, 50% intermediate and 25% advanced.
The progressive terrain park at Harper is located on the lower Spillway trail off the T-Bar. It is open during the day as well as during night skiing/riding. New features added routinely!
There are two loops for cross-country skiing, one that’s 3 km (1.86 miles) and one that’s 5 km (3.1 miles). Both run through a forested area, are occasionally track set, but are not patrolled, so take a buddy. Bring your own or pick up some rentals at the Snowsports School & Shop at Harper Mountain Resort.
The rental shop also offers downhill gear for a half-day, full day (or night) on the slopes for skiers and riders of all ages and sizes. Helmuts are free to all mountain-goers, compliments of the Wendy’s Helmut Program.
The Snowsports School has patient, qualified instructors ready to teach the beauty of skiing or snowboarding to children as well as adults. All instructors are Canadian Certified.
Lesson options include one or three-day packages that teach everything you’ll need to get going on the mountain. Reservations are recommended, but some last minute reservations will be accepted (subject to class space). Lessons also available from experienced pros for those who are past the beginning classes, but still want to learn.
Harper Mountain is also home to a Ski Club, which is organized as a non-profit dedicated to providing young children with developmental alpine ski coaching. The club offers the Rio Tinto Alcan Nancy Green Ski League, which has ski racing for kids between 5 and 11 years old.
The ski league members are taught the indispensable skills of agility, balance, coordination, strength, speed and how to have fun. In addition, the seven-level Husky Snow Stars program provides a skill building and incremental approach to downhill ski racing. Each level is clearly outlined, putting safety first.
