Durango, Colorado was first settled during the famous gold rush in the 1800s, but is now known for the rich variety of Durango tourism attractions.
Comfortable Durango lodging includes bed and breakfasts, hotels and even guest ranches that will truly acquaint you with the ways of the modern Wild West.
Located in the extreme southwest of the state of Colorado, Durango is named after the city of its same name in Mexico, which was named for another city of its same name in Spain. The original town was from the Basque “Urango,” which means “water town.”
Water town isn’t so far off the mark, with the Animas River
flowing through town, known for its gold medal fly-fishing and whitewater rafting.
Thanks to the precious metal craze in the surrounding San Juan Mountains, Durango has an old, rare, narrow gauge train. Instead of hauling the gold ore it was made for, now it transports tourists from Durango to Silverton. The 45-minute trip takes passengers through a gorgeous unspoiled mountain landscape, a definite must-see during your trip to Durango.
The Animas River Valley is also a great place to practice outdoor sports. It’s a mountain biker’s paradise, with a large local community of bikers and an annual race, the Iron Horse Classic, which draws cyclists from around the nation.
Whitewater rafting is another popular area activity. Take your pick between the nearby Piedras, Animas and Dolores rivers for your wild ride through big Colorado rapids.
All the water in the area draws other river visitors: fishers. Don’t forget your pole when you come to this Colorado vacation destination!
