Located on the east side of Field was a steep grade known as the Big Hill. Big Hill created many problems because it was the steepest stretch of mainline railroad in North America. In 1909, the railway solved the Big Hill issue when they constructed the Spiral Tunnels. The Spiral Tunnels replaced the direct route but made the trip less steep, and more manageable.
Probably one of the most significant discoveries in Yoho National Park was that of the Burgess Shale in 1909. It remains a popular attraction to the Canadian Rockies national park to this day.
