FIELD, BRITISH COLUMBIA — YOHO NATIONAL PARK — The word “Yoho” comes from the Cree word for “awe” and “wonder.” It’s no surprise that Yoho National Park was named after such a word. This Canadian rocky mountain park is filled with beauty. Bordered by Kootenay National Park on the south side, and Banff National Park on the eastern side, Yoho National Park is certainly worth a visit on any Canadian Rockies vacation.

Why Visit Yoho National Park?

There are many things to see and do in Yoho National Park. To make your Canadian Rockies vacation complete, consider the following activities and sightseeing opportunities.

The Burgess Shale

The Burgess Shale is one of the world’s most famous fossil fields. Why? Because the soft parts of the fossils have been remarkably preserved. The fossils found there are over 500 million years old. You can also explore the interactive Burgess Shale exhibits at the visitor centre and at Emerald Lake.

Emerald Lake

As the largest lake in Yoho National Park, there are many things to see and do around its blue-green waters. Hiking, walking, skiing, canoeing, and setting up a picnic are all fun activities to indulge in. There’s also accommodation and a restaurant available for your convenience.

Note that because of the lake’s high altitude, Emerald Lake is frozen from November until June.

Central Location

The town of Field, British Columbia acts as an administrative center to Yoho National Park. Because Field is close to the Alberta, Canada border, you can stay in Field, nip across the provincial border to explore Jasper National Park and Banff National Park, and return again to Yoho National Park.

Go Whitewater Rafting in Yoho National Park

One of Yoho National Park’s major attractions is the Kicking Horse River. Its class II and class III whitewater rafting is perfect for beginners and will thrill expert whitewater rafters. Try whitewater rafting with one of our many trusted rafting outfitters.
